Those who invested in First Western Financial (NASDAQ:MYFW) five years ago are up 31%

If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you’d hope to be making a profit. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But First Western Financial, Inc. (NASDAQ:MYFW) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 31% over five years, which is below the market return. Some buyers are laughing, though, with an increase of 26% in the last year.

So let’s assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they’ve moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

Check out our latest analysis for First Western Financial

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it’s a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, First Western Financial actually saw its EPS drop 22% per year.

Essentially, it doesn’t seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn’t seem to correlate with the change in share price, it’s worth taking a look at other metrics.

On the other hand, First Western Financial’s revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 4.1% over the last five years. It’s quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

This free interactive report on First Western Financial’s balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

First Western Financial provided a TSR of 26% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 6% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We’ve identified 2 warning signs with First Western Financial , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.

But note: First Western Financial may not be the best stock to buy. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with past earnings growth (and further growth forecast).
